Good news. The Clean Up Day was a great success! We had several wonderful volunteers from ECSU and they did a wonderful job of weeding. On Sun. some of the garden regulars gathered to prepare the walkways and put down wood chips. We will be replenishing the raised beds with soil (thank you Al!) this Thurs. before the first Planting Day Fri. April 22nd. That is planned for 10:00am till Noon. It looks like we might have a donation of many vegetable plants from a local grower, but not until the first week of June. So, that means, we likely will focus on adding compost to the beds, mulching and probably planting some veggies directly by seed this Fri. the 22nd - and then hold another planting day as well once we have the donations and our seedlings are ready to be put in the ground. We're also being donated some composted manure by a member of the Storrs Freecycle group. So, check back soon for updates. And please do join us -- we have a lot of fun.

Harvesting Update 9 Months, 2 Weeks ago Karma: 3
We were unable to meet last Fri. because of the weather situation, however, folks did make it down Monday morning and afternoon. There was a nice harvest of squash, tomatoes, cucumbers, and organic red potatoes. The garden was spruced up a bit as well and is looking great. Most of the tomato plants will be ready to harvest next week and we will be putting in another batch of greens as well. We'll keep you posted on the next harvest date/work party so keep checking back with us or just drop by St. Paul's for more info. Hope to see you. -B

UPDATE: COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT AT TAYLOR COURT 8 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 3
COMMUNITY GARDEN PROJECT UPDATE:

I will add some photos here soon of this year's garden in Willimantic located at the junction of Valley St. Extension and Milk St. It is doing well but we could always use more volunteers. St. Paul's Episcopal Church has two beds in the Taylor Court garden this year, and is donating the vegetables to Covenant Soup Kitchen. You can contact us at 860-942-8367 for more info.

We have two new gardeners, Elvira and Anton (Tony) using one bed. And three of the neighborhood children also joined us, including 6 year old Ricky.

While the garden is really starting to produce now, our squash really took a hit from the Mexican squash beetles. These are copper-colored beetles often mistaken for Lady bugs because of the dots on the body. In larva form, they are yellow with black spikes. I have been squishing them by hand, but also spraying Neem oil. They did so much damage before I saw them, though, that I had to cut a lot of badly chewed leaves off. If you are looking for them in your garden, look for clusters of tiny copper colored eggs.

We may be starting a Facebook page for the garden. You can also find info. at St. Paul's Facebook page or just drop by St. Paul's at 220 Valley Street. I'll keep you posted at this forum about upcoming events. Hope you can come join us.
