Litany for God’s Mercy Sunday November 15, 2020

Fran Pratt

Oh God, look upon us now
And have mercy.
For our society’s dysfunctions are set before you,
Our secret sins revealed in the light of your countenance.

We are ashamed at the state of our institutions,
At the rampant injustice,
The sanctioned inequity,
And the fraudulence of the times.

Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us,
For we have had more than enough of contempt.
Our soul has had more than its fill of the scorn of those who are at ease,
Of the contempt of the proud.

Let us not fall asleep as others do,
But let us keep awake and be sober;
And let us be shrewd in the use of our talents, energy, time, and resources
So that we may reap a harvest of justice and peace.

Let this be the dawn of a new age:
One in which human thriving is prioritized,
The lowly are lifted up,
The marginalized are seen and heard,
The peace of Christ* upheld,
And the mercy of God enfolds us.

May the long effort of the prophets,
And those of us working for justice
Come into fruition.
May righteousness and truth prevail in our land. Amen
